A Chart-Journal Method for Failed Breaks
Document failed breaks with context, acceptance, and invalidation instead of saving unexplained screenshots.
A screenshot taken after a sharp reversal proves that a reversal happened. It does not preserve what you knew at the break, what would have confirmed acceptance, or where your interpretation became invalid.
Save three frames
Capture the range before the attempt, the candle that leaves it, and the response after the break. On the first frame, mark the boundary and the swing that defines failure. On the second, note close location, displacement, and whether price created space beyond the boundary. On the third, record acceptance, retest, or immediate reclaim.
Use neutral labels
Avoid “obvious trap” or “manipulation” unless you define observable criteria. Prefer descriptions: “closed above the prior high, returned inside within two bars, then broke the launch pivot.” Neutral language makes examples comparable.
End each entry with one sentence: what evidence would have prevented you from calling the break too early? Over a set of twenty examples, repeated answers become material for a checklist rather than another isolated memory.
